postpartum herbal supports
As you may know, I welcomed a beautiful baby boy this summer. Ever the herbalist, I leaned deeply into botanical medicine to support me as I transitioned into motherhood. I wanted to share a few of my must-have herbs for the postpartum period — gentle yet powerful allies for the fourth trimester.
1. Nutritive Herbs: Oat Straw & Nettle
Think of these as nature’s multivitamins, filled with vitamins and minerals to nourish your body and mind. Fun fact: a stinging nettle plant “volunteered” itself in my garden weeks into motherhood — a beautiful sign that the plants we need most will always find us.
2. Motherwort
Motherwort tones the uterus, calms the nervous system, and supports the heart — a perfect triad for postpartum healing. I used this herb as an oil, a spray, and a plant essence, and I also happened to have it growing in my garden. I traced my fingers through her blooms every night to get a whiff of the unmistakable scent of motherwort.
3. Rose
I used it in baths, teas, body oils, room sprays, and tinctures. The tincture, in particular, was my game-changer for softening and opening the heart.
These gentle herbal allies held me during this sacred and transformative time. Always consult your healthcare practitioner before trying any new herbs, especially postpartum.
